HOME CRUSH: FAIRFAX CA HOME WITH A KILLER ENTRY

I love the Real Estate section of the local paper. Maybe it's because home prices are way up from when we bought 231 a couple years ago (so comps are worth a lot more), or maybe it's because I am just enamored with spying into other people's dwellings, but going down the rabbit hole of local home listings is of my favorite things to do on a Sunday morning.

Last weekend I was doing just that when I found this listing for a $2.1 million dollar gated estate in Fairfax, here in Marin County. I was intrigued when the listing said "Chance of a lifetime to own this Gated Estate with colorful history. Features grand living and one of Marin's few bomb shelters turned wine cellars all on over one acre" and "How many home sites have a shared history with Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio, The Daughters of the Holy Spirit Catholic nuns, pygmy goats, the Mafia and a military officer?" How interesting....

Then I looked at the pictures and it was love at first sight. Here they are.

How incredible is that? They call the home a ranch style, but it has so many craftsman details, and with 4,800 square feet of living space there would be plenty of room for even our huge extended family.

Here's the entry way. I'm wiping the drool as I type this... just look at those sidelights.

And I think this might be my very favorite part of the home. Holy vaulted wood beam ceiling with a skylight!

The other thing I like about it is all the work that needs to be done. If I got my hands on that place I would rip that ugly banister out and put in something cleaner that fits the space. And who wants tile when you could have some beautiful dark hardwood to match those wood beam ceilings, with colorful area rugs everywhere.

But the architectural detail just can't be ignored. All that light flowing in from two walls of windows, and check out the fireplace. You could leave it as is or create a focal wall with natural stone.

And my favorite part (I already had a favorite part, didn't I) my OTHER favorite part of this place is the setting. The views are unbelieveable.

I think I could move in and never leave that home again hang out there for a while.

There are a ton more pictures of the place on the listing website, but many of the rooms are missing the decor that they really deserve. Somebody needs to move in to this home and make the inside as beautiful as the outside is.

Anybody got a couple million dollars they'd like to lend me?

P.S. I know this post is a departure from what I really want this blog to be, which is a chronicle of our DIY adventures in our own home, but I couldn't resist sharing this spectacular place. It will probably never happen, but if we are ever in a situation where we are able to build our own dream home, it is definitely going to need that vaulted skylight and those wood beamed ceilings. And I'll have these pictures to show the architect. Now please excuse me, I'm off to buy a lottery ticket.
